Disclaimer: The project below was created as an example for learning purposes only and is still in development. The customer (Anytown Reproductive Health Center) and the statistics are all fabricated in order to mimic a real-world example of a problem for which eLearning is the solution. This outline, the design documents, and the Storyline course are all intended to show my knowledge of the instructional design process as well as knowledge using Articulate Storyline 360. These materials in no way reflect on any real reproductive health centers and their dedication to the patients they serve.
Introduction to the Project
This course was created for Anytown Reproductive Health Center to teach patients the different steps and medications used during a cycle of in-vitro fertilization (IVF). The goal of this course is to inform new IVF patients of the process and medications they may be using to help them feel more prepared as they begin the cycle.
Role
Instructional Designer and Subject Matter Expert
Problem
In a 2022 survey, patients at Anytown Reproductive Health Center showed disappointing levels of satisfaction with how the clinic prepared them to begin the IVF process. Only 60% of respondents indicated that they were "satisfied" or "extremely satisfied" with the information they were given prior to starting their IVF cycle, while 40% of respondents indicated they were "unsatisfied" or "extremely unsatisfied" with the information given. When asked if the explanation given to them by their doctor or nurse regarding the IVF process was sufficient, only 60% of respondents replied that they felt they understood the process before beginning, while 40% responded that they did not fully understand the process even with the doctor or nurse's explanation. This course solved this problem by giving the patients more information about the process of IVF and allowing them to explore all of the steps on their own time and as frequently as possible, until they understood the necessary information to feel comfortable moving forward in the process.
Research
A patient survey was sent out in 2022 with a variety of questions. The survey found the lowest scoring areas to be the way IVF patients felt in regards to the preparation and education they received prior to the beginning of their cycle. Research was conducted to identify the most common elements of the IVF process patients wanted to know more about. The areas that patients wanted the most information on included learning about common medications used during an IVF cycle and what they do, when in the cycle the medications are used, and what the timeline is and what happens between egg retrieval and embryo transfer.
Project Goals
- Create a short course outlining the IVF process and medications used so all patients are comfortable before starting.
- Allow patients to have access to the course at home so they can explore the information on their own time without feeling rushed.
- Utilize this course for all patients new to IVF in order to ensure they feel prepared for, and knowledgeable about the process.
- Increase "satisfied" and "extremely satisfied" responses on the 2023 survey to 85% or higher regarding patient satisfaction with the information given to them prior to starting the IVF process.
- Increase patient responses on the 2023 survey to 90% or higher regarding patients feeling that they understand the process of IVF before beginning the cycle.
Design Process
To complete this project, I used the ADDIE model.
Analyze
Analyze
- 2022 survey was analyzed and the target areas were determined by the leaders at Anytown Reproductive Health Center. Focus area was determined to be helping IVF patients feel more prepared for the process.
- In discussing what type of training would be best for this scenario, the leaders at ARHC decided they would like an interactive, self-paced course that they could offer their patients to go through at home that could be completed in as little as ten minutes.
- Together, we decided using Storyline 360 would give us a great course for these learners and allow for a high level of interactivity.
- During this process, I completed the design document below to outline the basics of the project for the ARHC leaders.

Develop
- After completing the design document and in-depth script and getting them approved by the leaders at ARHC, I began development of the Articulate Storyline 360 course. Before development began, I met with the leaders and we agreed on expectations for communication and check ins. Throughout the process, there were multiple opportunities for me to get feedback regarding the course from the leaders at ARHC.
- After the course was completed, it was implemented at ARHC. All patients who were being referred to IVF as a treatment plan were given the link to complete the IVF training module after their initial consultation. Patients were able to complete the training on their own time and fill out a short survey regarding the training after, allowing us the opportunity to tweak the training as needed.
- A survey will be conducted at the end of 2023 for all patients to see if the goals for the course were met.
- Surveys were sent to patients who have already completed the training and all patients so far have responded positively and were thankful to gain the essential knowledge in order to help them feel more prepared for the process.
Next Steps
I will be in contact with the leaders at ARHC as needed, but we have scheduled monthly meetings until the end of 2023. At the end of the year, the same survey will be sent out that was sent in 2022 and we will meet to compare the data. Any necessary changes to the course will then be made.
